Model Crystal Renn rocked 1940s-style glamour as she celebrated Naomi Campbell's career at an event in NYC last week. The 29-year-old model showed off her cleavage in a low-cut floor-length purple chiffon gown at the Marc Jacobs & Benedikt Taschen hosted party at The Diamond Horseshoe. The beauty wore her brunette tresses in short pin curls, crafted by our own Leonardo Manetti. Styling middle part and prominent waves up front, Leo added to her dramatic yet glamorous look.

Daily Mail covers Crystals' Look right here.

Upcoming Trends: Bangs, bangs, bangs!

Leonardo Manetti on the 2016 upcoming trends.

"Fringes are becoming relevant again. We at ION STUDIO NYC predict we will be seeing a lot of different kinds of Fringes and Bangs through the end of this year and into the fall season of next year. Our model, Julia, came in with long - one length hair. Leo felt the easiest way to give her something exciting and new was with a fringe and layers."

We used the Davines Texturizing Spray and Shimmer Mist to style Julia. Leo started with rough drying Julia's hair with a paddle brush after applying product. After that Leo used his hands to style hair with texture and movement.
Leo did a long layer cut with a fringe for Julia. Adding a little space between the end of the bangs and the beginning of the face framing to bring attention to the square shape the bang created.

A WOMAN UNDONE For the latest Models.com MDX editorial, Tiziano Magni gets tied up on the stunning Esther De Jong for freshly charged visuals with a kinbaku bent. Both are back in their image-making element: Behind the camera, Italian photographer Tiziano is best know for his Kate Moss and Michael Bergin Calvin Klein ads while, in front, Dutch model Esther’s career reached exalted heights with multiple Vogue Italia covers and Dior, Chanel and Prada campaigns during the heyday of supers. Also below, the two unravel the shoot inspired by art and Esther herself.- Models.com

Esther: Tiziano reached out to me explaining the core and inspiration of the story and where I fit in, because of that, before we started shooting the photographs we were on the same page and a lot of direction was not needed.

Tiziano: I see “Bandage” as a play on ‘bondage’. The sweet tying-to that fashion creates for us. Soft ribbons create masks, clothes and swim suits. They allow us to become something different–play with our sense of identity. I like it when fashion become a tool in playing with something deeper: our sense of self, the persona we present to the world.

Our ownLeonardo Manetti played along the bandage theme, creating some stunning wet looks complimenting Esther's persona.

EMILY: 'My hair feels very light, free, and sexy!'

"Having big hair has been an everyday struggle for me but Leo was so good with my hair, my hair now feels very light, free, and sexy."

Leo really wanted to create some movement and "space" within Emily's haircut so she could feel sexy but still have big hair. Sometimes big hair can be overwhelming and feel like it's taking over. Leo was careful to create weight removal and space for Emily's hair to move. The result was absolutely beautiful and loved by all.

"I was never a fan of big long hair until Leo cut/styled my hair, and showed me what amazing big long hair actually looks like and I'm in love!"

Leo used the Authentic Cleansing Nectar to wash Emily and then used the authentic replenishing butter to condition.
He applied the Moisturizing Balm from the same line to style with a little No Gas Spray.

This is a great natural and gentle line for all hair types. You can also use all the products from the authentic line on hair and body.

Our own Tim Nolan styled actress Jennifer Damiano for the opening night of American Psycho. Tim went for light textured waves with elegant side part to accentuate her look.

Broadway Style Guide followed American Psycho star Jennifer Damiano the week leading up to opening night on Thursday, April 21— from her fitting with stylist Scott Allgauer to backstage in her dressing room to the party at Stage 46. In Duncan Sheik and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 thriller about a (potential) serial killer Patrick Bateman (Benjamin Walker), Damiano plays the Bateman’s secretary Jean, a woman who fascinates and eludes the antihero. In between shows, fittings, and other press engagements, Damiano texted with executive editor Suzy Evans. A transcript of their conversation is right here.

STRAIGHT TALK: Half up, half down LOOK by Marco Santini!

Hair: Marco Santini
Model: Jen Dance
Photographer: Matt Licari

This look was used for the STRAIGHT TALK class and is a new version of the half up, half down look. This can be used for weddings or commercial work as well.

First Marco blew out the hair with Oil no Oil with a little volume at the root.
After blowdrying he took a 1 inch section from right below the crown and french braided it all the way to the nape.
After that he raked the hair away from her face with his fingers using the cocktail of moms and Oi Milk to give it a satin finish, using a light layer of Dry Texture Spray to create a little hold.
It took panels from the side of the head and then, secured it in the back on top of the braid.
the braid is not something that is seen, as it is covered with hair, but is there to secure the pins.
The reason he chose to use a brand underneath the style rather than teasing is its flatter to the head, and not tangly - leaving a smother shape.

STRAIGHT TALK: Ponytail dressed up by Leonardo Manetti!

Straight Talk

Hair: Leo Manetti
Model: Natalia Trou,
Photographer: Matt Licari

First Leo blow dryed the hair straight with Volu Mist, everything away from the face.
The first section was right behind the ear, to the top of the crown securing the first pony.
Second section was from the rounds of head to the occipital bone.
Snd the third pony was secured at the nape.
After securing all three ponies, he secured them to each other loosely, creating little loops.
This is a great way to dress up a simple pony tail as well.
We used the Shimmering Mist to finish the look with a light shine that still lets texture shine through.

Meet Colin McCarthy, NEW STYLIST at ION STUDIO NYC!

We're super excited to introduce our new talent on board. Meet Colin McCarthy!

Colin’s hairdressing career began when, at the age of six, his mother realized he had taught himself to french-braid using ribbons she’d tied to his sisters bedpost in hopes that she would pick up the coveted skill.  Luckily enough, she never did.

After graduating high school, Colin moved to New York in 2003, and soon thereafter began a course in cosmetology at the Aveda Institute followed by an apprenticeship with Antonio Prieto Salon. It was with Prieto that Colin was introduced to the world of editorial hairdressing.

With an increased hunger, Colin then spent ten years at Bumble&bumble where he honed his skills behind the chair, on set, backstage, and as an educator.  He traveled extensively, assisted editorial hairdresser Laurent Philippon, and developed a dedicated clientele that remain the focus of his career.

Never being satisfied, Colin simultaneously pursued his Bachelors degree and, in 2009, began attending Columbia University.  He studied Art History with a focus on architectural history and theory, graduating cum laude in 2015.

To BOOK your appoinment with Colin, call our lovely front desk at 212.343.9060.

LONG TO SHORT: Curls gone undercut!

Hair: Leonardo Manetti
Model: Kendall Shaw
Styling: Leonardo Manetti
Photography: Matt Licari

This look was used in the Long to Short Davines atelier class.
Leo blew her out with 1/2 Medium Hold Paste, and 1/2 Relaxing Fluid.
Once she was blown out he took 1 inch sections and wrapped the hair in a figure eight pattern around the big hair pin, securing it with a bobby pin.
He left the sides and back out, simulating an undercut. He french braided it at the end of the style to secure the pins when rolling the hair under.
After flat ironing the wrapped hair on the pins, we took it out and separated it with our fingers.
The pins were set about an inch or two away from the roots to keep the top flat.
He then took the hair, rolled it under and secured the shape to the braid.

Stunning 1940s UPDO by Leonardo Manetti!

Check out this gorgeous 1940's Wolrd War inspired look by Leonardo Manetti!

ION: What was your inspiration for this look?

Leo:I wanted to bring back the classics. To try to do something not so literal, but had a feeling of the 1940s. Something that was wearable by today's standards but felt like the 1940's. We've been working on this for Atelier.

ION: So beautiful. How do you stay inspired after doing hair for so long?

Leo: I try to surround my self with people who have a high standard in their work. It's important to me as a business owner, to have people around me that are doing great work. I look at it not in a threatening way, but as a way to do better myself. I'm a big believer in teamwork and working together for something bigger than ourselves.
Leo: I also think observing youth is a key to inspiration. My daughter is the biggest inspiration for me. She has different ideas and images that she likes and makes me think in a new fresher way. Being older, I have a vast knowledge of beauty, but with out the spark of my young one, it means nothing.

HOW TO:
1. Blow out hair with Volume Building Mousse.
2. Section one side at the recession and one side slightly lower. Bring top section back to the high crown.
3. Clip top section out of the way and pull rest of the hair in to a sleek low ponytail. Use a bungee to hold in place.
4. On the low parting, take a very small section of hair and french braid from back to front hairline. Complete braid and then pin on top of itself neatly. This hidden braid will be used to hide pins in.
5. Take diagonal sub sections, through top section, use a 3/4 inch iron. Wrap hair around the iron while twisting the hair to create a corkscrew curl.
6. Once the top is curled, brush through, back comb lightly underneath the section to hold it together, and then roll it under and pin into place.
7. Take small sections of the ponytail and curl with the same 3/4 inch iron, wrapping the hair around like a corkscrew again.
8. brush ponytail out after curling is complete and shape as you like.  (if you are leaving the back as a pony tail, take a small section from underneath, spray with strong hold hairspray and wrap it around bungee. Keep it flat like a ribbon.)

Marco Santini's sexy take on a BRAID, inspired by vintage corsets!

$

Marco's sexy take on a braid, inspired by alluring vintage corsets.

ION: How did this style come to be?

Marco: It was late and I was talking with the model we were shooting, Julia. I wanted to give her something wearable, that she could leave the salon with... She threw out some ideas. Maybe a mohawk, or some kind of braid? I thought to myself, that could work, but a mohawk is too harsh for her, let me try to combine the two. When it was done, I noticed the lines of the ponytail looked like fabric and the braid looked like the stitching of a corset, like a ribbon.

ION: Is that something you do a lot? Work with your clients to find a look?

Marco: Yes. I've been trying lately to marry my session work with something that is wearable. It is something that we have been focusing on in our Atelier classes.

ION: Where do you find your inspiration?

Marco: I like to keep an eye on the young kids...To be honest, sometimes they like things that aren't my style. But I try and make an effort to find out why I don't like it, and then try to do it my way. Then I end up liking it. It's always about pushing yourself to do better and try new things.
